One More Reason to Go Vegan!

Taken from MSNBC.com:

WASHINGTON - Federal scientists have concluded there is no difference between food from cloned animals and food from conventional livestock, setting the stage for the government to declare Thursday that cloned animals are safe for the human food supply.

The Food and Drug Administration planned to brief industry groups in advance of an announcement. The agency indicated it would approve cloned livestock in a scientific journal article published online earlier this month.

The agency “concludes that meat and milk from clones and their progeny is as safe to eat as corresponding products derived from animals produced using contemporary agricultural practices,” FDA scientists Larisa Rudenko and John C. Matheson wrote in the Jan. 1 issue of Theriogenology.

I just saw that news and even if I wasn't vegan it'd creep me out. Seems like the same is true for many other people too. One article I just saw said the dairy industry is concerned about this because of a poll that showed many people would stop eating dairy altogether if some of it was from cloned animals.

Sigh... when will we learn...

I think this is truly awful that people don't think of animals as living breathing entities that can feel, hurt, love, and enjoy life. They think of them as commodities that can be used and manipulated however they want.

I heard it on the news today and couldn't stop talking to my husband about it. Perhaps though if Chris is right and people stop eating dairy altogether, they'll realize how easy and great it is to be vegan. My husband was wondering if they are cloning dairy cows, if they could clone only females, perhaps we wouldn't have veal as byproducts anymore and maybe that would reduce suffering somewhat.

I also heard that they would not have to have special labeling. Regular milk/meat and cloned milk/meat could all be lumped together under one big umbrella. I have a feeling though that the general public is not going to take to well to this. Perhaps there will be enough outcry to demand changes to the entire industry (one can dream, right?)

I hadn't thought of the prospect of only cloning females - that's an interesting idea.

I just think the whole thing is ridiculous-people aren't going to stop seeing animals as products any time soon.
