E.G.G.
E.G.G. stands for "Ethylene Gas Guardian" and is touted as the best defense against premature ripening of fruits and vegetables. When fruits/vegetables ripen, they emit a gas, ethylene. Another substabce, zeolite, absorbs ethylene before it can overripen your veggies! These little egg-shaped canisters contain enough zeolite for three months. Refils are available and a year's supply costs under $15. The website suggests using the used zeolite to feed your houseplants.
