It's a traditional onion dish from the Balsamic Region of Italy.
Recipe
Balsamic Roasted Onions
8 small red onions, halved and not peeled
1/2 cup Balsamic vinegar
2 Tbs olive oil
1/4 tsp sea salt (or to taste)
Place onions cut-side up in lightly oiled roasting pan. Combine oil, vinegar, and salt. Pour over onions. Bake at 450 for 20-40 minutes until onions are soft and outsides are crispy.
I ate them plain and topped a salad with them.
